Surprise ... Well Not Really!!

Saturday Rob was up bright (not sure if it was actually bright out yet) and early to get everything prepared for the work to begin on the house.  Some friends, family and church members came down to help and by 1:00 pm everything except the mudroom had been stripped and was ready for spray foam ... except, we found the surprise we didn't want to find once the stripping began.  To be honest it wasn't really a surprise, we had just been praying that we wouldn't find what we found.

The rafters on the steep side are all rotten.  On the flat roof the tresses are rotten on the area over the soffits (which as I previously mentioned, had all been filled with insulation instead of being allowed to vent as they are suppose to).

This means that the rafters will need to be replaced on the steep side and in order to get proper air flow they will have to make the roof higher and the doomer windows will need to be raised about 3-4 inches.  On the flat side the tresses over the soffit area will need to be replaced and then the facia will have to be redone because the back of it is rotten ... which in turn means the facia has to be done around the whole house in order for it to all match.

The hydro service which is anchored to roof of the house was rotten as well and when putting on the tarp at the end of the day the pole it was on fell off.   Rob manage to hold it together and reattach it for now, but someone from Hydro One will need to come out to fix it while they are redoing the overhang.  Another thing that will need to be coordinated to get this job done.

Once all of that has been completed, inside the house the ceiling on the steep side of the house is going to need to be mudded and repainted.  Thankfully Gerald was there with his work van and being a painter he had plenty of plastic available to cover all our stuff upstairs.  Drywall litters the upstairs where every screw is on the steep side.  And this will get worse when they put in the new rafters.  They will have to remove each rotten rafter one at a time in order to keep the drywall "attached" and then place a new rafter in it's spot.

Because the discovery of the rotten rafters meant that Rob had to go get lumber for the next step of repairs the helpers were free to go home as there was no more that they could do for the day.  This coming Saturday will involve rebuilding the roof and likely the following Saturday will be reshingling time ... just depends on how things roll.

Rob was very thankful that he had prepped the tarp already the day before as a suddenly flash storm decided to dump some rain for a few minutes at the end of the afternoon and they were able to quickly get the tarp over before we had even more damage to deal with.  And so, this is the beautiful site you will see if you drive by our place now.
